VARANASI, UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA - The Bhartiya Janata Party’s Member Of Parliament, Mr Varun Gandhi, 30, tied the knot with Ms Yamini Roy Chowdhury, 28, in a simple ceremony at the Kamakoti temple in Varanasi on March 6, 2011. Conspicuous by their absence were his aunt Ms Sonia Gandhi, and his cousins Rahul Gandhi MP and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The youngest grandchild of the late Prime Minister Of India, Ms Indira Gandhi, was dressed in a traditional kurta dhoti and his pretty bride was dressed in a pink sari, handed down from her mother in law’s collection and bestowed as a gift from Ms Indira Gandhi. The marriage was solemnized according to Sanatan Hindu customs. The head priest of the Kanchi temple Jayendra Saraswati also blessed the couple.

Reporters were not allowed into the venue of the marriage ceremony. After the ceremony, Varun told reporters he was “feeling great”. The marriage pandal was adorned with flowers from different states of India and the district police, security personnel and the provincial armed constabulary, stood guard till the ceremony was over. The reception scheduled for March 8 in New Delhi, has been cancelled following the death of 77 year old Ms Amteshwar Anand, Varun’s maternal grandmother, on February 28. The pre marriage haldi ceremony was at the Kamakoti temple, the earlier evening. The rituals continued for three hours in the morning, from 9.00 am onwards, and the couple spoke to reporters, mediapersons and locals therafter.
