The term Social Media is being heard more and more often recently. Many people may not know what it really means. To me I see it as part of the evolution of the internet, which was invented as a means to send messages electronically from one location to another.

In the early 80s, the internet was still undeveloped and reserved for geeks and techie users. Internet connection was slow and expensive so it didn’t appeal to the general public. It was only in the late 90s with the advent of the Internet Broadband, which made digital communication affordable to many people. That created an internet boom called Web 1.0.

Fast forward ten years later, technology has created affordable mobile devices capable of sending and receiving digital contents anywhere in the world. This is called the Web 2.0 era. During the Web 1.0 era, digital contents were mostly text and simple graphics. Now contents are richer with multimedia format such as graphical animation, audio and video.
